Welcome to the Year 2 Class page!

Mrs Chilvers is the teacher in year 2.

R Time





We enjoy  ‘R time’, which is a sharing session whereby the children work with different partners and  take part in creative activities on the theme of practicing  good manners and  respect  always.


Ms Flewitt is our KS1 Sports Teacher. She teaches PE every week  and the children have uniform2tremendous fun learning team games, athletics, gymnastics and uniformdance. Children are required to have a separate P.E kit to change into, consisting of a T -Shirt, pumps or trainers and shorts.

  •  Spellings to learn which are directly linked to the phonics being learnt the following week – tested every Tuesday
  •  Reading Record – Please aim for three parent comments per week


xmasAfter the Christmas holidays our homework increases in preparation for KS1 SATs

  • Spellings as above – tested every Tuesday
  • Reading now to have a greater emphasis on the understanding of what is read, and questions about
  • A piece of writing or English grammar work
  • A piece of Maths work


satsDuring the weeks beginning May and June we will be setting the statutory end of Key Stage 1 tests for Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, and Maths. This is a time for your child to put into practice what they have been learning throughout the year. Your child will have plenty of time to complete the tests and will be doing a myriad of exciting craft based activities alongside them in order to make it a very special couple of weeks.

Parent support

better togetherWe love parents to come and help us in Year 2. We often need volunteers for outings and we currently have one parent volunteer who comes in and listens to readers, helps with cooking, baking or sewing.

We extend a thank you in advance for taking the time to volunteer and help support us. Please see the office staff, if you are interested in offering regular help.

Show and Tell

This term we give children the opportunity to speak about a topic / object of their choice to the class. This is then followed with five minutes of Q & A session. We feel public speaking is an invaluable tool for life and have been really impressed with the confidence and preparation gone into our soapboxes so far. You should have received a more detailed letter about this which highlighted the date your child’s soapbox is on. These are also in the class notice boards.

Transition to Y3

In the second half of the summer term we will be concentrating on easing the transition for your child from Year 2 to Year 3. This will involve visiting the Year 3 classroom so that the children can get used to their new teacher ad classroom environment.

Phonics & Spelling

abcIn year 2 we concentrate on Phase 5 – 6 in phonics, with children being placed in groups according for consolidation of earlier phases. These classes are run daily with an emphasis on fluency of sounds and application in reading and writing.

Wen hearing your child read please try to use decoding strategies by referring to the phonemes they have been learning. When spelling children need to know the sounds in words before writing them, however there are some tricky words which just need to be learnt.

Please ask your child which spellings they are learning for homework. Spelling is tested, with new spelling will be given out weekly.
