Welcome to the Foundation Stage at Becket Primary School
The Foundation Stage consists of the FS1 children (Nursery children) who attend part-time (15 hours per week) and the FS2 children (Reception children) who are in full-time education. FS1 and FS2 children and staff work together to form the Foundation Stage Unit.
The Foundation Stage Unit offers a warm, caring and stimulating environment where our children can learn and grow together, with each child valued as the individual they are.
Parents are welcome at all times. You can help your child both at home and at school if you wish. If you would like to share in the activities at school or help with resources at any time you would be very welcome. You will be invited into school for our Open Day, Parent’s Evenings and other activities throughout the year. Please come in and join us! You are always welcome to talk to a member of staff at the beginning or end of the day.
The Foundation Stage Curriculum
The Foundation Stage is very important in giving your child the best possible start to their school life. It probably won’t feel like learning – most children see it as just fun and play. As they get to grips with speaking and listening, singing and dancing, stories and counting, they’ll be gaining all the basic skills that will get them off to a flying start. We have our own curriculum written by our staff, which clearly sets out what the children’s learning outcomes are. These are all in line with the new Early Years Foundation Stage.
The new EYFS curriculum consists of:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Building relationships with peers
Self confidence and self awareness
Managing feelings and behaviour
Understanding the World
People and communities
Language and Communication
Listening and attention
Space, shape and measure
Moving and handling
Health and self-care
Expressive Arts and Design
Exploring and using media and materials
The children have daily teaching inputs in groups and as a class. The inside environment has different areas of learning where the children can practice the skills they have been taught – the sand area, the construction area, the reading area, the writing area, the numeracy area, the investigation area, the water area, the malleable area, the role play area, the playdough area, the creative area etc. The children also have the opportunity to follow their own interests with a wide range of resources they can access independently.
The children also have time outside everyday, where again there are different areas for the children to develop their learning – the reading area, writing area, creative area, physical area, wheeled vehicle area etc. The Foundation Stage Outdoor area is fully enclosed and safe for all our children.
Within the Foundation Stage we have topics based around questions.
Why Am I Special?
Why Are There So Many Leaves On The Floor?
Where Does Father Christmas Live?
During your child’s time with us we are constantly monitoring their progress. Their progress and achievements are recorded in the Learning Journals. Please look at these records and contribute information from home to give a fuller picture of your child. At the end of Year 1 the Learning Journals will be yours to keep.
