At Becket Primary School we aim for Religious Education to provide rich opportunities for pupils to recognise and appreciate diversity of religions and non-religions. The RE curriculum is a broad based curriculum which helps to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, social, and mental development of pupils. Pupils will learn from religions and world views about different ways of life. They will discover, explore and consider many different ways to answer questions about human identity, meaning and value.
They will develop an understanding of the values and practises of Christianity and the other main faiths in the world. They will be given opportunities to develop respect, tolerance and an understanding for the beliefs of others. Enabling pupils to be academically challenged and personally inspired. Where possible, pupils will have first-hand experiences of places of worship, celebrations and festivals.
By the time they leave, pupils will have a deeper understanding of Christianity and a respect and appreciation of other faiths. They will appreciate differences in the school community and the wider world and have nurtured the values of respect and tolerance as they make the transition to the next phase of their education.
RE is a discrete, foundation subject which comes under the ‘Historical, Geographical and Social Understanding’ area of learning. The school follows the Derbyshire Agreed R.E syllabus 2020-2025. The children will be learning and researching about the main religions of the world including those represented in our community. All children are expected to take part in RE and collective worship unless parents have asked for exemption. The amount of R.E will depend on the topic being covered but by the end of each year the children will have answered key questions from a range of the main religions.
The children will have the opportunity to visit various places of worship and will have first-hand experiences of celebrations and festivals. RE will encourage children to ask questions and take part in discussions to help reflect and to understand themselves and the world in which they live in. The children will have assemblies delivered to them by external Religious organisations and assessment comments will be made on the end of year report.
